Out with The New

In September 2019 I decided to stop buying new for a year. Below is a repost of my first blog post

I love shopping, I guess I am a recreational shopper, I like, spending my time looking at a things to buy in big shops small shops,, charity shops, expensive shops. Then I started to feel a little guilty, bad, uncomfortable about the amount of clothes I own , buy and to be honest ,seldom wear. I had already tried to stop buying so called fast fashion and focused on buying only second hand or good quality items but still I have this feeling of too much unneeded consumption . I am talking about this from a personal view although I understand that is has far wider relevance .

I have decided to stop buying new clothes for a a whole year starting now, I didn’t want it to be a new year resolution and September is a good month for starting new things. I have since found out that Oxfam are running a  Secondhand September campaign

https://oxfamapps.org/secondhandseptember/?pscid=ps_ggl_Google+-+PE+-+Trading+-+SHS_SHS_brand&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkaDN5oGy5AIVBYfVCh1caAD_EAAYASAAEgLCdPD_BwE . Which challenges people to pledge to buy secondhand instead of new for one month. For my personal challenge I think changing my habits for a year will hopefully help me understand my compulsion to shop, to own new things ,even when I don’t need them

The rules are

  1. buy no new clothes, shoes or accessories until 1/09/20

  2. can buy underwear if needed

  3. can make new clothes

  4. can buy secondhand clothes

  5. Not sure about gifts but definitely should not get husband to buy clothes and say they are gifts

I am planning to continue this blog throughout the year, sharing my thoughts on clothes ,fashion waste, recycling and other musings that may come up

I’m also hoping to add a small vintage sale section at some point  when I can work out how to do it.
